Vehicles / vehicle combinations for which the limits in accordance with Art. 64 – 67 VRV exceed the legal maximum masses and weights may only travel on public roads on the basis of a written permit and are generally escorted. The cantons of eastern Switzerland in particular have outsourced these escorts to private exceptional transport escorts with a police permit (ATB). This leads to more efficient escorting for the transporters, as an ATB can accompany the entire route (an ATB from a single source).
